When I friend of mine initiated a separation after almost 30 years of marriage, we began a conversation surrounding topics like roles in relationships, parenting as well as midlife dilemmas such as issues with self-worth, self-esteem and core identity.

In one of our conversations, the terms Micro-Manager and Utilitarian Mom came up.

Utilitarian: designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive.

This essay is a personal reflection how how I evolved into a more utilitarian, micro-managing mom during some of the more challenging parts of my parenting journey.
